Christian Theological Seminary’s Compelling Preaching Initiative is an 18-month certificate program for Exemplar preachers to engage in a cohort model as they learn about the theology and pedagogy of teaching and preaching while further developing their own preaching method. The certificate program includes a mentorship component in which the Exemplars will mentor and coach aspiring preachers called Apprentices. Additionally, the September 2024 and September 2025 Mixed Methods Preaching Conference will be supported under this initiative and will offer writing workshops and teaching labs for preachers to enhance their preaching style as they learn from experienced preachers.

While the CTS Compelling Preaching Initiative is an extension of the PhD Program in African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric, it is its own non-degree program which seeks to engage preachers working towards a certificate as Exemplars, preachers desiring to learn from mentoring relationships as Apprentices, and preachers who wish to attend the Mixed Methods Preaching Conference for continuing education. The Compelling Preaching Initiative was intentionally created to serve those who love preaching and are interested in learning more about African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric, but who may not have time to attend a full degree program.

Pathways to Promising Employment

Poverty and employment used to be considered mutually exclusive. Today, however, many Central Indiana residents live in or on the verge of poverty despite being employed, and others struggle to attain employment. It’s a problem too big for individual agencies, congregations, or nonprofits to tackle alone. To find pathways to promising employment, our entire community must work together.

The 2023 Faith & Action Spring Conference brought together subject matter experts, organization leaders, and like-minded community members to discuss solutions to the poverty and injustice facing our neighbors. Anchored by keynote speaker Rabbi Sharon Brous, the day included conversations about work and poverty, the sharing of best practices, and testimonies from community members about their journey to promising employment and stability.
