Leah Burgess

Rev. Leah J. Burgess is a faithful mother, wife, poet, advocate, and minister. She serves as a Student Affairs professional at Howard University School of Divinity and is an Elder at Community of Hope SDA Church. Burgess is Co-Director of the Black Contemplative Society and founded Creative Sabbatical, fostering creative, trauma-informed, and womanist centered experiences. Burgess’ interests include exploring homiletics through a contemplative womanist hermeneutic rooted in communal liberation. Her proposed research examines the complexities of race, gender, trauma, and spoken word poetry as a relevant practice for the preaching moment. Burgess currently resides in Prince George’s County, MD.
