Howard-John Wesley

Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley is the Pastor at the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. He’s focused on studying the methodology and rhetoric of Black preaching during times of cultural trauma. Additionally, he’s studying the role that Black preaching plays in the transformation of rage into productive social action. For his dissertation, Howard-John is researching the methodology and rhetorical devices used by Black preachers in response to the killing of Black youth.

He chose the CTS PhD program to prepare himself for teaching and contributing to the field of African American homiletics. He hopes to be part of the renaissance of preaching in America that’s rooted the genius and the legacy of African American preaching.
