Description
The Discovery Café is an inclusive community for young people ages 12-17 who may be facing mental health, substance use, or other challenges. We offer a fun, substance-free, judgment-free space with games, art, music, outings, and opportunities to learn about topics or skills that are important to the youth members. The wide range of activities provide support for overall well-being as well as recovery support for anyone who may be on a recovery journey. Recovery challenges may include substance use, mental health, depression, anxiety, loneliness, grief/loss, trauma, overeating, overworking, homelessness, incarceration, or anything that keeps us from thriving. We believe we all deserve to be deeply known and loved, and that we all have unique gifts and talents needed by our community.
The Discovery Café Indy Senior Café Manager has a deep understanding of the Café’s vision and works to nurture and maintain our guiding principles. They are responsible for youth outreach and growing the program, provision of school-based strategy (alongside We Bloom’s Executive Director), cultivating and managing partner relationships, supporting Members through discovery and peer recovery support programming, engaging with members to determine and coordinate activities that are fun and meaningful for the well-being of the members.
Days and hours of operation: The Discovery Café is currently open on Wednesdays from 3-7PM and Saturday from 3-6PM; the schedule of work is as follows.
- Tuesday: 10:00AM-6:00PM
- Wednesday: 11:00AM-7:15PM
- Thursday: 10:00AM-6:00PM
- Friday: 10:00AM-6:00PM
- Saturday: 10:00AM-6:15PM
The Discovery Café Indy Senior Café Manager’s roles and responsibilities are included, but are not limited to, the following:
Scale Discovery Café Indy as a pilot program of We Bloom: 60%
- Increase youth membership by building and nurturing relationships with new community partners and youth serving organizations
- Creation of referral strategies with education and hospital systems, government agencies, faith communities, and youth serving organizations
- Co-create Discovery Café Indy’s strategy for school-based integration with Executive Director and Associate Executive Director
- Develop and maintain a regular schedule of on-site partner visits to schools, youth-serving organizations, and faith communities
- Initiate and coordinate satellite peer support services including facilitation of Discovery Circles, learning activities, and 1-1 peer support for youth
- Represent Discovery Café Indy at youth-related events and programs within Marion County
- Collaborate with Café Manager to develop and execute strategies to address the transportation barriers specific to youth
Operations & Management of Discovery Café Indy: 20%
- Support the creation and delivery of youth programs that engage teens (12-17) in developmentally appropriate, social, recreational, and educational activities
- Assist in coordinating and facilitating daily Café activities with the Discovery Cafe Manager
- Co-create and manage the Discovery Café budget with Associate Executive Director
- Coordinate the development of a youth advisory board
- Plan and implement youth-centered community events
- Make referrals and connect youth to needed services
- Create and distribute program-related content on social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
- Co-create a safe and inclusive, healing culture within the space, monitoring Cafe Member and guest behaviors
- Ensure guiding principles are being upheld by all in the Café space
Program Development of School for Discovery: 5%
- Connect with community partners and volunteers to identify course facilitators
- Create program materials (course applications, lesson plan templates, feedback forms, etc.)
- Manage scheduling of School for Discovery classes
- Maintain attendance records of course participants
- Support in marketing efforts (creation of class flyers, program calendars)
- Attain evaluation of classes and workshops upon completion and identify future class options
Actively engage with the We Bloom team: 10%
- Attend Weekly 1:1 Supervision with Associate Executive Director
- Supervision of Discovery Café Indy Manager (Program Manager)
- Facilitate Weekly Staff Meeting (Level 10)
- Facilitate Weekly Discovery Circle Consult
- Attend Weekly Staff Recovery Circle
- Participate in required staff trainings
- Support team-wide effort to sustain a safe, welcoming environment.
- Embrace and promote the Cafés environment of radical hospitality
- Communicate and enforce Café guidelines, guiding principles and boundaries with loving accountability.
- Maintain professional boundaries when working with youth, their families, and partner agencies
- Provide guidance for Members and volunteers in ensuring the Café remains clean and beautiful: clean-up of the meal service counters and tables, trash/recycling removal, vacuuming, bathroom stocking and maintenance, sweeping front sidewalk, the parking lot and area around the Cafe
Required Qualifications:
- 2-3 years direct work with youth (preferably mental health and substance use prevention)
- 2-3 years of community engagement/outreach
- 1-2 years of program development
- 1-2 years of start-up experience (creation of a new business or management of a new program) - must have the ability to self-start and self-manage
- 1 year of prior supervision experience
- Must have strong interpersonal communications skills
- Ability to consistently serve as a motivator, conflict resolver, and “de-escalator” for Cafe Members
- Ability to work amicably on a diverse staff team with flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm
- Proficiency in basic computer skills (Windows) sufficient to communicate effectively with staff and other agencies using Microsoft Office, and email
- Personal understanding of the recovery journey (our belief is that we are ALL recovering from something!)
- Ability to embody principles of recovery in daily interactions
- Strong desire to support individuals who are on the recovery journey
- If the candidate has a history of substance use and/or mental health challenges, they must have at least one year of continuous recovery
- Capacity to be loving and to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with Café Members who at times may be very challenging
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Minimum Education, Work and Skill Requirements:
- Education: Minimum of High School degree (or equivalent); 2-3 years of experience in human service may be substituted.
- Work Experience: 1-2 years’ work experience in a position utilizing skills relevant to this position.
- Peer Recovery Coach or Certified Recovery Specialist Training or ability to attain within 90-days.
- Food handling training certificate or ability to attain within 14-days.

Salary Range: $50,000 - $55,000
