Lisa Goods

Rev. Dr. Lisa M. Goods is the Senior Pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. She has the distinction of being the first female pastor in the church’s 173-year history.  Her areas of study include womanist preaching, prophetic preaching, womanist pastoral care, and prophetic rhetoric. Specifically, she focuses on examining the prophetic speech of African American women and the ways in which Black women employ the womanist lens inherent in their tripartite oppression of race, sex, and class to speak prophetically and work to disrupt racial traumatization. Her dissertation research is centered on understanding how womanist pastoral preaching addresses the issues of trauma precipitated by racial and gender-based marginalization.

She chose CTS because she has deep respect and love for the uniqueness and discipline of African American preaching and its power to affect change. She says this program was unique in its particular focus on that, and it is the only program that truly recognizes the greatness of the Black preaching tradition. Lisa has a desire to pass that knowledge on to the next generation of preachers and scholars pedagogically.

Her recent accomplishments include:

  • Appointed Associate Professor of Homiletics at Fuller Theological Seminary
  • Presenting at the 2021 Academy of Homiletics – Paper Presented:  “A Womanist Pastoral Homiletic”
  • Presenting at the 16th Biennial Communication Conference at Duquesne University – Paper Presented: “Purple Pulpit Politics:  The Prophetic Preaching of African American Women Pastors During the 2020 Election”
  • Earning her Doctor of Ministry Degree with Distinction – August 2020 – Thesis: “Church Revitalization:  a Journey Toward Relevant 21ST-Century Ministry Within The Historic Black Church Paradigm – A Meeting of Justice, Piety, And Culture”
