Queer and trans people are often deeply attuned to the sacred and are frequently conscious of the need to attend carefully to their spiritual lives. At the same time, many have experienced trauma within faith communities, often reinforced by appeals to religious authority.
This session will explore how chaplains and spiritual caregivers can recognize the inherent spirituality present in queer life, establish credibility as trustworthy caregivers, and cultivate spaces that are “safe enough” for LGBTQ+ persons to enter. The goal is to deepen chaplaincy practice and foster richer, more ethically grounded spiritual care encounters.

Rev. Elizabeth M. Edman is an Episcopal priest, political strategist, and author of Queer Virtue: What LGBTQ People Know About Life and Love and How It Can Revitalize Christianity (Beacon Press, 2016).
She has worked extensively at the intersection of religion, sexuality, and public life, including serving as an inner-city hospital chaplain to people living with HIV/AIDS in the 1990s, developing political and communications strategies for marriage equality efforts, and organizing Christian communities in response to anti-trans legislation in the present day. Her work bridges theology, advocacy, and pastoral care in service of more inclusive religious and public spaces. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
