An update on our progress on the initiatives outlined for the first year of our strategic plan. Goals are focused on: Increasing Enrollment, Providing a Lifelong Learning Approach to Education Church and Community Leaders, Establishing Justice Resources for the Church and Establishing Excellence in Institutional Infrastructure.

“What is God inviting us to consider?”
This question guided development of the strategic planning. As we met with hundreds of stakeholders—thought leaders in theological education, alumni, church, and community leaders in Indianapolis—we kept coming back to this question. We had to be deliberate and thoughtful in our approach in order to create a forward-looking plan that embodies a persuasive and hopeful image of the future and a credible path toward achievement of this vision. Our planning culminated in CTS 2030: Project Transformation—a vision for where we want to be in less than a decade, as well as our path toward that destination.

Black History Month Lecture at Christian Theological Seminary

Explore how the logics of sacramentality lay important groundwork for the violent logics of white supremacy. By thinking about violence and anti-Black practice along the theological axis of sacrament and grace, we register these practices as problems for how we imagine and experience the very presence of God.

Rev. Nick Peterson is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University. His research explores racialization as a theological practice of violence. Nick’s work shows how theology can and has functioned as violently anti-Black by bringing radical Black feminist and Afropessimist insights into productive discourse with Black and practical theology.

The PhD Program in African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric at CTS is hosting its second Mixed Methods Preaching Conference on May 2-5, 2022. The conference will be held entirely online.

Scripture and theme: Ephesians 3:18, “Preaching the Inexhaustible Love of God”

We are proud and excited to offer this second conference as a recipient of the Transformative Grant from the Gilead COMPASS Faith Coordinating Center at Wake Forest School of Divinity, which aims to improve inclusive ministry and expand faith communities for those living with HIV/AIDs.

The conference is an initiative that includes the ministry gifts and support of: Bishop Claude R. Alexander, pastor of The Park Church of Charlotte, North Carolina; Dr. Gina Marcia Stewart, pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee; and Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, pastor of Friendship West Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas.

Faith & Action Spring Conference: Poverty and Mental Health

Join faith leaders, lay leaders, activists and groups from Central Indiana’s nonprofit sector to “Push Back Poverty” at the Faith & Action Project’s seventh annual spring conference on March 9. This year’s event puts a spotlight on a key factor in generational poverty: mental health. Through candid and informative conversations, we will seek to destigmatize mental health and equip congregations, organizations and individuals to come alongside those who fight twin battles against poverty and mental health.

How can nonprofit and faith organizations partner with established initiatives to address poverty and mental health? How do we recognize and respond to trauma?
