Early this year, CTS Dean of Students Rev. Mary Harris was informed that she had been selected by the Obra Hispana to receive the “Premio Somos Uno” – the ‘We are one’ award. Presented every two years by the Central Pastoral Office for Hispanic Ministries, the Premio Somos Uno recognizes “significant and relevant people, doing ministry in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at the general, regional and/or academic level of the church.”
‘Somos Ono’ or ‘We are one’ is the core ideal of the DOC Hispanic Ministries,” explains Hector J. Hernandez of the CTS Office of Recruitment and Admissions. “It is a way to affirm that, although we as Hispanics in the United States may come from different countries, we are all still one people,” he says. “So, this award affirms that Mary is ‘one’ with Hispanic communities throughout the United States.”
In notifying Rev. Harris of her selection, Rev. Dr. Huberto Pimentel, National Pastor for Hispanic Ministries, wrote “you have been selected to receive the Premio Somos Uno because of your significant ministry at the academic level of the church. Your dedication and pastoral support to the Hispanic students in their process, from admission to the final steps of graduation, is evident. Your respect for the dignity of the Hispanic Student is a model of how we deal with our theological and ethnic differences, loving and supporting each other, in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).”
Obra Hispana, who selects the award recipient, translates into ‘Hispanic works,’ but is better understood to mean ‘Hispanic Ministries.’ The Central Pastoral Office for Hispanic Ministries is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Racial/Ethnic Ministries. It promotes, undergirds and coordinates work of Disciples Hispanic Ministries. The mission of the Central Pastoral Office for Hispanic Ministries (CPOHM) is threefold: to offer pastoral care to Hispanic ministers and congregations; to advise and counsel the different manifestations of our denomination about Hispanic ministries; and, to be an advocate for Hispanic people, congregations and issues.
The Premio Somos Uno will be presented to Rev. Harris on Saturday, July 19th at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego, CA during the Obra Hispana Banquet of the Hispanic Biennial Fellowship Assembly. For more information, visit www.obrahispana.org
