Carmelo Alvarez is Puerto Rican and is an ordained minister within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He received a B.A. from the University of Puerto Rico, the M.Div. (Magna Cum Laude) from the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, and did graduate work at Emory University in Church History, where he was a doctoral candidate. Carmelo and his wife Raquel Rodri­guez were missionaries in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Chile for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

He was professor of Church History (1975-1992), Director of Admissions (1975-1978), and President (1978-1982) of the Latin American Biblical Seminary, San Jose, Costa Rica. Carmelo worked for the Latin American Council of Churches (1984-1986) as Secretary for the Consolation and Solidarity Ministry and as Regional Secretary for the Caribbean. He was Executive Director of the Ecumenical Research Department, San Jose, Costa Rica (1987-1992).

Carmelo has participated actively in the ecumenical movement as a member of the World Council of Churches and National Council of Churches USA commissions and as General Secretary and Treasurer of the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians (EATWOT).
