The Discipleship Project Application Checklist

The Discipleship Project (TDP) is a scholarship program for up to 12 full-time, residential MDiv students at CTS.  TDP scholars will complete the regular MDiv curriculum – and in addition to this coursework, they will also meet together regularly with faculty mentors, engage community leaders, and visit vibrant congregations to learn first-hand about what works (and what doesn’t) in Christian ministry today.  Each cohort’s third and final year will culminate with an international site visit (to Jerusalem, or other destinations, for example).  And for two years following graduation, CTS will support each cohort in staying connected via online networks and periodic reunions.

Applicants to The Discipleship Project should send the following materials the seminary’s Office of Student Services:

  • Completed Masters Degree Program Application for Admission, including the non-refundable application fee of $50.00. Click here to pay the fee online.
  • Two recent portrait-style photographs, approximately 2” X 2”.
  • The regular applicant personal statement (not to exceed 5 pages double-spaced) describing the formative influences on your life, your values, and your sense of religious vocation. We urge you to refer to particular ideas, people, events, family of origin, films, theatre, works of art, church relationships, etc. This statement should express your reasons for seeking seminary education, what you hope to gain from such an education, and what you feel you might contribute to seminary life..
  • A Supplemental Personal Statement, not to exceed 1,250 words, in which you describe in concrete detail the gifts that you would bring to The Discipleship Project specifically.  Some examples include: creativity, a commitment to social justice, openness to diversity, intellectual curiosity, leadership skills, self-awareness, deep spirituality, teachability, etc.

Applicants to The Discipleship Project should arrange to have sent to the seminary’s Office of Student Services:

  • Official transcripts of all courses and grades from each college, university, seminary, or graduate school you have attended.  These transcripts should be sent in sealed envelopes directly from the institution to the Office of Student Services.
  • Four Letters of Reference on the official form: one personal or professional reference from someone other than a relative who knows you well; two references that speak to your academic preparation and talent; and one letter of endorsement from your congregation or judicatory.  Ordinarily these letters should be sent in sealed envelopes directly from the institution to the Office of Student Services.  If the applicant submits these letters with the Application for Admission, the signature of the person completing the form must be placed across the seal of the envelope.
  • An application to The Discipleship Project cannot be considered until all of the required documents are submitted. For the current admissions season only (Spring 2012), applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through June 30, 2012. In future years, beginning with applications for the 2013-14 academic year, the application deadline will be January 15, and selected applicants will be invited to attend a required full-day, on-campus, group interview.
