American Church History

Hints for searching the computer catalog for American Church History

Use keyword first, then look at the subject headings. i.e.  abolition? methodis?  (finds only 1 book.   Notice abolition is not used as a subject heading, but slavery is used.) slave? methodis?  (47 books)

To limit a topic by denomination
keyword:  DENOMINATION  TOPIC (i.e. methodis? evangel?)  (296 books)
keyword:  PUBLISHER TOPIC  (i.e. abingdon  evangel?)  (79 books)

To search for a person search both in keyword and then find the exact way she is indexed, then do a subject search.
keyword: edwards jonathan (375 books)
subject: edwards, jonathan, 1703-1758  (58 books)
Encyclopedias:

To get an overview, it's very useful to start with an encyclopedia or dictionary article, but don't stop there.  Always check the bibliography and footnotes for lead to other sources!

Standard American Church Histories

Another way to introduce yourself to a topic is to read what several standard general histories have to say about it.  Find your topic in the index, and read a few pages.  Always look for more sources in the footnotes!

Finding Articles:

Use the ATLA Religion Database to search for articles. Note that unlike the books computer catalog, here  you have to type AND between keywords. As in the computer catalog, look at the subject headings, and use those words in another search.  For biographies, use the "person as subject" line, and use F2 to browse for the exact form of the name use in this index (with dates, and middle initials, etc.)

Humanities Index indexes more general American history periodicals such as:

Journal of American History, and Journal of Southern History.

Suggestions for research paper topics in American Christianity and how to narrow topics
  1. The key to a good research paper is picking a topic which is (1) narrow enough to cover in 20 pages and  narrow enough for you to master in the time you have, (2) a topic for which there are sources available, and (3) a topic which is interesting and contributes to the general subject matter of the course.
  2. Pick a single event that exemplifies the topic you want to study: i.e. You are interested in student involvement in missions, you could write a paper on the first Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions  International Convention of 1891.
  3. Pick an individual who exemplifies the topic you want to study:  i.e. You are interested in the fundamentalist / modernist controversy, could write a paper on Clarence Macartney.
  4. If you are interested in a general topic, limit it to a denomination, and maybe even a time period. i.e. You are interested in the slavery, perhaps you could do a paper on the Baptists and slavery.  Or Presbyterian involvement in higher education in the nineteenth century.
  5. Trace a practice or a doctrine in a denomination. i.e. practice of celebrating the Lord's supper among AME churches.  Changing teaching about the atonement in Congregational and UCC publications.
  6. Perhaps you're interested in an historiographic issues.  A topic could be: Is the frontier thesis still useful for describing Disciples history?  or Is there really a distinction between Urban and Rural expressions of  Christianity?
  7. Another approach would be to ask how various denominations responded to a particular event. i.e. What were the official denominational responses to conscientious objectors during Vietnam: Roman Catholic, Disciples, Methodist, Baptist and Mennonite?  or to the rise of the KKK   or to mainline declining membership.
  8. You could also start with a major change in American culture, and ask how it effected American Christianity.  i.e. What has been the impact of the automobile on American church life?  or the impact of immigration in the early 20th century?  or the impact of industrialization?

Periodical Articles

Use the paper indexes Old Testament Abstracts; Religious and Theological Abstracts; or Catholic Periodicals Index located on the index shelves in the reference area.
and  Use the CD-ROM on the periodicals computer for the ATLA Religion Index:

Searching by scripture references and keyword:

Using  the scripture reference field on the search screen of the ATLA periodical index is one of the most effective ways to refine and delimit a search for an article on a particular passage.
Using the Periodicals Computer to find articles on Numbers 6:22‑27
on the search screen, arrow down to the field marked:  "scripture ref:"
press to browse index entries.  (This will generate a list of bible references, starting with "1 CHR" (First Chronicles))
type in the first few letters of the passage you're interested in.

Hints:

- Keep typing until you get to the passage. you may end up having to type in the whole thing.
- Check the scripture reference abbreviations on the back of the ATLA Religion Database Quick Reference Guide if you have trouble locating the reference in the index.
- Scripture references in the databases are sorted in a peculiar way by the computer.   For example, "NUM 1" is not followed by "NUM 2," as you'd expect, but by "NUM 10," followed by "NUM 12," "NUM 13;" finally, after "NUM 19"; then comes "NUM 2," followed by "NUM 21" and so forth.

use the arrow keys to move down to the reference you want
press to transfer the reference to the search screen
press again to perform the search
press to display the articles

If you try this method for Numbers 6:22-27. you'll find references for both 6:22-26 and 22-27; enter each one successively (the computer automatically inserts the operator "OR" between the references).  "Num 6:22-26" or "Num 6:22-27"

This search generates seven citations to articles.

Another strategy to get all the articles on Numbers 6 would be to enter the search:
"Num 6*"
This search generates 17 articles.
The "*" is a wild card character which stands for any character or characters.

Using the Periodicals Computer to find articles on Deuteronomy 6:4-9

The difference between this and the Numbers passage is that you can utilize the "keyword" field as well as the "scripture ref." field.
In the field marked:  "scripture ref:" search for "Deut 6:4*"
this generates  26  citations

Press to view the citations.
Press to clear the scripture reference field.
In the field marked "keyword" type Shema
this generates 76 citations
Press to view the citations

Books

Searching the Computer Catalog for books, you can try a key word search : discipl? mark? bibl?
Also, you might also try an expert keyword search:  fin su bible nt mark and (discipl? or apostl?)
(The ? and the end of search terms completes the word with multiple endings, i.e. disciple, disciples, discipleship, discipline.  In expert keyword searching, putting synonyms together with "or" in brackets expands your search.  i.e. (discipl? or apostl? or follow? or pupil? or student?).

Recent books include:

Articles

You can search the ATLA CD-ROM for periodical article citations.

On the keyword line try  discipl* and mark*  and bibl*
The * completes the word, like the ? in the Computer Catalog.  At the periodical computer you must put "and" between words you want to connect.

F3 displays the articles citations.  Write down the citation, and find the journal on the main floor of the library, shelved alphabetically by title.  Journals we do not have can be order through inter-library  loan.

It the citation says "Essay" it will be in a book of essays, rather than a journal.  You must check the Computer Catalog to see if we have that book of essays.

You can also put discipl* on the keyword line, and mk* on the bible reference line and you may get different articles.
